I’m a little bit confused about the porn/prostitution response. On the most basic level, they are men paying for access to the female body as an object for their own sexual pleasure. Both are completely dehumanizing to women. I agree with doing whatever we can to make it safe for individual women and support them by all means necessary, but I highly dispute that prostitution and porn are not inherently misogynistic. - cellisterine

Excellent question. My answer is this: first, not all sex workers are women, and not all consumers of pornography and prostitution are men. But obviously the majority of sex workers are women doing it for men’s consumption. It’s tricky to say something is inherently anti-woman when it doesn’t only apply to women, but like anti-choice laws, I understand the intention behind saying it’s pro- or anti-woman since it mostly applies to them.

While the consumption of porn can be dehumanizing, giving people the legal right to be filmed performing sex acts is not inherently dehumanizing or misogynistic. The emphasis is on choice. If someone wants to “sell their body” in whatever format - stripping, porn, prostitution - they should be able to. Women and people of every gender should be allowed to make their own choices with their body, even if it’s a choice some people morally disagree with.

Making sex work illegal seems more misogynistic then prostitution and porn, because we’re controlling women’s choices due to our own perceived morality. Let women and sex workers of every gender choose what’s best for them. If they don’t have a problem with someone getting turned on by watching them, then I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think it’s ever misogynistic to let a woman make an educated choice for herself.
